EMILY
12.22.2008

Meet Emily, my latest senior.

(1) I always start out with the "safe" shot, to make sure we get that in the can. For me, that usually means shooting from above with a long lens shot wide open. Works every time. Pay attention to your background. Even though the wide aperture blurs the background, I'm careful to select the pattern and colors I want to frame my subject and minimize distractions.  Canon 5D w/85mm f1.8, ISO 200, f1.8, 1/2000 sec, no flash.

(2)  Emily likes the outdoors, so we went into the woods for the next few shots. For this one we were going for a bit more drama. Canon 5d w/35mm f1.4L lens, ISO 100, f4.0, 1/200 sec. The first step was to meter the shot without the strobe in manual mode. I metered the shot about 2.5 stops underexposed to darken it. (The shot was taken at noon). Then on camera left I had a 580exII flash with a shoot-through umbrella. I adjusted the power on the flash to set the exposure on Emily, about 1/4 power.

(3) For this shot I wanted to shoot wide open, but I also wanted to light it with a strobe. Canon 5D w/35mm f1.4L, ISO 100, f1.8, 1/200 sec.  The only way to light this shot without overexposing Emily was to set the flash at 1/64 power.

Have a great holiday!

Jahangir : Great shots and perfect explanations . Many thanks Jahangir Canada (12/23/08, 07:45)
Scott Roeben: Great shots! Thanks, as always, for breaking this down for us. The technical details are invaluable in trying to recreate these shots. (12/22/08, 03:35)
Laurence Kim: hey Joe, yes you understand correctly. I shot in manual mode, keeping the ISO at 100 and shutter at the max synch speed of 1/200. Then I took a few test shots, at various apertures, adjusting them until the histogram showed the shot was 2.5 stops underexposed. Then I lit my subject by adjusting the power on my strobe until Emily was properly exposed.  (12/22/08, 02:09)
Joe Chuang: Hey Laurence, in (2) Could you explain a little bit more when you said \"I metered the shot about 2.5 stops underexposed to darken it. (The shot was taken at noon). Then on camera left I had a 580exII flash with a shoot-through umbrella. I adjusted the power on the flash to set the exposure on Emily, about 1/4 power.\" Do you mean the correct reading for the scene was 2.5 stops higher than f4.0? (Meaning f1.8 would\´ve been correct exposure?) (12/22/08, 01:23)

LAURA
10.24.2008

Meet Laura, my latest senior and a super girl.

No actions (other than sharpening) were used on any of these images. Images 1,3 and 4 were straight Lightroom conversions, no Photoshop.

1. Canon 5D w/85mm f1.8, ISO 100, f6.3, 1/200 sec. Guess what the background is? It's white seamless paper. You can turn any background black just by separating the subject from the background and keeping your lights from hitting it. I wanted to turn the background black so I put a 10* grid spot on my strobe. Laura is about 10 feet from the paper.

2. Canon 30D w/17-55mm f2.8 EFS lens @55mm, ISO 500, f2.8, 1/500 sec, no flash.

3. Canon 30D w/17-55mm f2.8 EFS lens @40mm, ISO 200, f/10, 1/250 sec, Canon 580exII flash camera left with shoot-through umbrella. Even if the location isn't great, you can always get a clean background by using the sky.

4. Canon 30D w/17-55mm f2.8 EFS @17mm, ISO 200, f10, 1/250 sec, 580exII camera left.

Laurence Kim: hi Ali, I think it was a Westcott, but to be honest, they´re all pretty much the same. much quicker for location work than a softbox! (11/20/08, 08:57)
Ali: Love these! What brand of shoot-through umbrella do you use? I have a Photoflex small softbox (extra-small, actually) and I have such a difficult mounting the &*(&U%@ thing on a lightstand. I´ve thought about buying a shoot-through umbrella just because it seems easier to assemble. (11/17/08, 08:14)
Laurence Kim: hey daveo, no special reason for using the 30D. It was a hike, and I didn´t feel like carrying a lot of extra gear - just wanted one body with one lens. So I decided to use my 17-55 EFS zoom, which required using the 30D.  (10/25/08, 10:11)
daveo: Love the first and second photos. Both are completely different but capture the mood and personality of the subject. Well done! If you don´t mind me asking, why did you switch to the 30D for the outside shots?  (10/25/08, 06:34)

Colleen: Gorgeous images and girl, love reading your comments and specs. Love your use of various lighting within the session - large softbox, grid spot, window light, available light. I try to provide that to my clients too - hopefully they appreciate (and are willing to pay for) that difference which they may not get elsewhere. (11/25/09, 09:39)
bj: She´s not a model? You have GOT to be kidding me, Laurence. Jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Btw, great lighting as well. (11/21/09, 08:02)
sarah rhoads: she is muy beautiful and so are the photos of her ;) (09/26/08, 11:47)
guy: Fantastic! (09/26/08, 09:56)
Scott Roeben: Breathtaking! Gorgeous subject and gorgeous lighting. Thanks again for providing the settings and info. about lighting. It would be a blast if you´d take a few steps back and shoot your set-up, or have someone shoot you shooting. I´m just saying. You are the lightmaster! "Ten degree grid spot"? More homework. (Oh, and let´s not tell this young woman that most photographers would shoot her for free just to have some great portfolio shots. Hork.) (09/25/08, 04:10)
Kip Beelman: She\´s smokin\´ for sure.  Great collection of images and I especially love #3... Killer quality of light. (09/25/08, 09:21)
maria: Love them all!  #7 looks like it should be on a billboard.  Beautiful! (09/25/08, 08:28)

MEAGAN
05.21.2008

Meagan was actually a first for me - the first time I did a senior session for a college senior, not a high school senior. And why not? I think it's a great idea!

Meagan is graduating from U Dub and wanted to document this important time in her life with a studio fashion shoot (although I convinced her to head outdoors for a few quick grab shots).

Congratulations Meagan!

Tech notes:  All images taken with Canon 5D and 85mm f1.8 lens. It was nearly dark outside, so off-camera flash was used on every shot (Alien Bee B800 w/60" umbrella). Studio shots were all taken with one light.

Meagan: Hi Laurence! I just stumbled upon these again and wanted to THANK YOU for doing such a fantastic job. My parents and family (plus myself) still adore these photos :) Thanks again! (03/01/10, 12:52)
Sarah Rhoads Photo: well done as always my friend. sweet that she is a college senior. like that. (05/22/08, 07:34)
Laurence Kim: Just a standard umbrella, not a shoot-through. (05/21/08, 06:08)
Scott: Great shots! I´m sure she was thrilled with the results. When you´re using an umbrella, are you shooting the light through it, or into it to reflect back toward your subject? Thanks for the freebie advice, as always! (05/21/08, 03:39)

AMANDA
03.12.2008

Another senior shoot this week, this time with Amanda - who's (isn't it obvious?) is also an aspiring model.  It was really dark and raining, so the entire shoot was in the studio.

We started with some ring flash, which really makes Amanda stand out against a white background.

These next couple of shots were taken in the freight elevator.  I lit these shots with only the modeling light from my monolight.

The next two shots were lit with a single large softbox to camera right.  No fill light or reflector.

Some beauty shots. I was standing directly in front of and below the single large softbox. Amanda is simply stunning!
